Vacation challenge: be completely offline

Tomorrow Darma goes on Holidyas. We’ll, that’s not really true, because we’ll dedicate a couple of days to work in Hotel Villaró project in Barcelona, but most of the time, we’ll try to enjoy and have fun. I was reading a really interesting article in Amalio Rey’s blog (in spanish) about how important is to disconnect completely during holidays. I confess  that while reading, I felt kind of  giddy and started to look for excuses to avoid the tips Amalio gives us. Luckily, in Blog.[cumClavis] I found the words I was looking for.

While Amalio finds that is essencial to disconnect during holidays, Manel from CumClavis defends the idea of feeling free to do what we want in every moment. I’m more for Manel’s advice but it’s true that Amalio’s answer is totally right: What usually an alcoholic feels like? (in all their shades, including the “workaholic”) keep drinking the same brew. So maybe to keep on hooked on our addictions couldn’t be good… Anyway I suspect that trying to put aside our virtual life during holidays is, at least for me, more stressful than staying stuck to it!

Amalio defends the need to disconnect and relax. To rest  is a human necessity  and to disconnect is a must to renew and refresh our knowledge and creativity. I couldn’t agree more, but when I do this and I need to go back to work after a few days, I can’t avoid the vertigo, I feel depressed and even I’m little bit lost in front the computer, I lost the rythm and I feel less productive. So, as Manel says, it’s not bad to keep connected to our daily life: check e mails, take a look to the social networks, read and write blogs,… I have the feeling you can’t not “erase” who you are, and we can’t deny that we are more and more “homus digitalis” with human-technology relations.

So, who’s right? Amalio or CumClavis? I promiss myself to try to be as analogical as possible during the holdyas, but I’m already worried about the WIFI connexion in the airport… I think I’m not going to be able to keep myself  clen and sober….

Anyway, we wish you all a great end of August and, if not sooner, see you in September!

Don’t forget you are 3/4 parts water

It’s summer and in Darma we thought these will be really calm months (speaking from the work perspective). Once again, we were wrong! we have so much work, we are even a little bit stressed. Luckily, this morning came to me this video and it reminded me how important it’s to let things flow. After all, we are made of water, why shouldn’t we be able to adapt and get into the circumstances?

Be water, my friend.

PS: Well, I must also confess that I love the aesthetics of the films of Bruce Lee. Nothing can be so kitsch and yet so inspiring!

Great idea: Creative Suite Toolbar Shortcuts Wallpapers!

Are you a designer? Unless you know all the Creative Suite shortcuts by heart, you are not a “real” designer. If you are not sure of your level, take a look at the pictures below and check how many shortcuts can you recognize (and how many are you using).

Well, if the result was not as good as you thought, you can always start using them now. People from Hongkiat make this process easier, they have created these great wallpapers for Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Flash, so you can learn the shortcuts and get rid of the click-and-search method.

Download them here.

Don’t give up, beginner! Inspiring visual advices for new creative professionals

More than once I cursed myself for not having another profession, “I should have been an accountant”, “Had to studied philosophy” “Must become a plumber” (and make a lot of money).  What? Impossible! I had to dedicate my youth to a profession in which a simple comment can strike down your motivation and mark you for life. All creative professionals remember a heartless teacher or a senseless criticism and  despite all, here we are! We can’t imagine ourselves in the shoes of any other professional, we love what we do and we don’t give up!

This is a message to all students and trainees: you are not as bad as they say, and not as good as you think. You can survive and, sometimes, even have fun! The secret? work, work work and work, and, after that, keep on working! And if even then you have “one of those days”, take a break, refresh your ideas and reinforce your motivation with these inspiring and beautiful posters.

NOTE: If you are not a beginner, you will surely encourage yourself too, life’s also hard out there…

The ten commandments of creativity

Even if you are an experienced creative, sometimes it’s good to look back and remember these sacred rules that all  trainees know by heart. Recall will give a bit of fresh air to your ideas and get you out of a mechanical method of work. I love going over and over again my books from college and challenge myself, looking for different creative techniques. I would say that, almost always, this helps me when I’m blank.

1. Stay engaged with the objectives

2. Open your mind, use the five senses

3. Separate the creation phase of the evaluation

4. Avoid the spoilers of ideas, surround yourself with a proactive team

5. Use sketches

6. Bring the product to the limit: do not stop picking up new ideas even if you have found a good one

7. Mistakes are good, can lead you to better ideas

8. The quantity (of ideas) leads to quality

9. Develop your sense of humor

10. When the brainstorming is finished do not test the ideas immediately, keep a safe distance, more objective.
